Perkins..408 overheating over 1500 rpm's
« on: February 19, 2016, 06:19:17 PM »
We have been trying to solve the problem of our engine over heating.  We have cleaned the heat exchanger, cleaned the  oil cooler, cleaned all strainers no corrisoni found.  The engine will for 24 hours at 1200 rpm's when we go  over that it starts to overheat going to  200 degrees.
Any suggestions ?  This has been an on going problem.  Good thing we like to sail.   When in doubt the mechanic wants to tear apart the engine
At a horrible cost.

We are up to our eyeballs in boat projects, with two boats in the yard, and so not spending much time on the computer.

Dave says there is a good troubleshooting list in the Owner's Manual, and one of the topics is "overheating".  He advises starting at the top of the list and working your way down the overheating list.

If you do not have a copy of the Owner's Manual, you can find a copy online by Googling 4.108 Marine Handbook.  I found one copy here, but it also includes all the other Perkins models of the same vintage.  There might be a better copy somewhere.

http://islander36.org/perkins/operatorsmanual.pdf

Note, I didn't take the time to locate the troubleshooting page in this version, but I did find it in the 4.154 version, it is on page 19/20 of this manual:  http://www.fujiyachts.net/manuals/Perkins%204.154%20Marine%20Handbook.pdf

There are also likely online PDF copies of the 4.108 Shop Manual that would help you go through the checks recommended in the Operators Manual.

Start with the cheap/simple stuff and work your way to the expensive/hard stuff.  The more you do yourself, the more you will learn and be able to diagnose the problems when you are stuck somewhere remote with no competent mechanic.

You might also find Nigel Calder's Marine Diesel Engines book helpful.  Here's an Amazon link to 1992 edition, which would be good enough for your Perkins.  You can buy a used copy for really cheap - Marine Diesel Engines

If you'd rather have the latest edition, here's a link to that one.  http://amzn.to/1Ud8G2O

Good luck!

Another Way welcome to the list.  What is your name?

How long ago did this problem start and was it a sudden change or over a long while?
How many hours on the engine since last complete overhaul.
Lots depends on your answers.

I would first start with the raw water cooling system and make sure you have the same flow now as you had when you didn't have the problem earlier.  If not, initially limit your search to inspecting every component in the raw water cooling system including the raw water injection elbow into the hot exhaust before the water muffler and a close look at the pump.  Have you made sure you don't have any blocked hoses between the seacock and muffler discharge?

If raw water out the exhaust is same as before look at internal cooling water system.  A good place to start is the thermostat which if stuck nearly closed would cause low RPM overheating.  If cooling water/coolant looking dirty/rusty try flushing entire system.  Also make sure pump is operating properly.

Once you are sure both these systems are working well it gets harder.  Look at the rest of the list including injectors, oil system etc.

Pls let us  all know what you find.  Forget any expensive diesel mechanic who wants to tear the engine apart until you have looked at everything you can yourself.

Good Luck Dave

Barb and Dan. Sorry about not posting that.  We have had the problem quite a while.  700 hours since rebuild
Will look into your suggestions and keep you up to date.  Thanks for the help
