Hull and Rig / Re: Stauchen Nuts and Socket Length

I believe it is a 11/16 inch socket. Socket only worked for me in some locations. The mid ship and most forward stantions required removal of interior components to access the nuts. Not a fun project but we were thankful when completed. We had two stantions that had corroded and the threaded rod broke on removal.

If original Crosby system the compressor either engine driven or dc electric. Follow the copper lines and you will find the compressor.

Hi Mike,

I had J. T. R. Enterprise, Inc. Make them for me. They are not the cheapest option but are very well made. He welds the lifeline pass through sleeves so there is no water ingress into the tube.  They have the patterns for the stantions so the are an exact match.

I do not have any of the old stanchions I wouldn't be comfortable having anyone use them in their condition. I did put the old coated lines back on for now but will be changing them out with Dyneema line in January.

Hi Dave,

According to the light flashes on the Merlin card it shows the compressor is running at it's slowest speed during the time it took to bring the freezer back down. 

Great system.  Thanks to you and every one else that offered their experiences, it made the planning and execution much simpler

Thanks for all of those who went before me and who shared their experiences our refrigeration overhaul is complete and I couldn’t be more happier with the results.  I have place some pictures of the project in the drop box under “Pictures of CSY projects > Refrigeration”

To summarize the project:

I installed a Frigoboat keel cooler freezer with a spill over system for the refrigerator.

Used a BD50 compressor and the F 380 evaporator.  Options included the Merlin speed card, and digital thermostats for freezer and spillover fan.

I removed the old Crosby system including the holding plates from the boxes.  The plan was to use the most forward box as a freezer and spill over to the middle box as our fridge.  The most aft box is now use for dry goods storage.

I increased the insulation of both boxes by adding ridged Corning foam to the existing walls of the boxes sealing all cracks, drain, and gaps in the top with expanding spray foam.  I raised the bottom of the boxes 17 inches with ridged foam.  I also packed out the back of the freezer box to have a flat wall to accommodate the evaporator.  The foam was then covered with Komatex 1/4 inch pvc and sealed with 4200.  I used a compartment under the starboard settee to install the compressor and keel cooler.

The system was straight forward as far as the installation goes once you figure out where and how everything will placed.  The most difficult, or should I say time consuming part, is making the boxes ready.  I can probably provide more operational data when I get back to the boat in January however, I did observe the cycle duty time during the mid day at 85 degrees and the freezer ran at the lowest rpm for 14 minutes and it was 25 minutes off before starting over again so our daily energy usage will most likely be better then my estimates.

beware!  I finally got around to replacing our gate and lifeline stanchions.  I did this because a few had small hairline cracks at the bases and the base plates were also cracked.  This is not an easy job and requires some removal of interior trim.  To my horror, there were three stanchions, one being a gate, that the threaded rod had completely corroded and broke off when I attempted to remove the nut.  A long time of water ingress also caused some rot on the camp rail.  Glad that job is over and much happier with the knowledge things are a lot more safe on board.

Mike,

The Komatex was used as final layer over insulation and then faired and fiberglassed over. Also used to build the top of the box and hatch instead of plywood. The bottom piece was a compound curve and its ability to be heat formed really came in handy.

Don, I would appreciate it if can you get one more measurement for me.  I need to know the opening to the box, L and W, at the lowest point of the lid.

Did you remove the frig top, or were you able to get the 380f evaporator in through the lid opening?  We are ready to purchase the Frigaboat system but I'm concerned with the size of that large evaporator fitting through the lid opening.

Thanks Don, sounds about right.  I assume that the Stbd. measurement is the hull side where the holding plate is located. If I'm correct then we are all good.

The measurements I need are from the bottom edge of the lid opening to the side walls of the box.  I'm interested in know how much set back space there is if I wanted to add interior insulation and new interior walls.

We are in the process of designing and planning a refit of our frig on our 44 WO.  Since the boat is about  1500 miles away I had taken a bunch of measurements with me when I left the boat last March. 

While in the midst of going through my notes I find that I omitted to take a measurement of the overhang of the top to the interior box.  If anyone has the ability to measure this for me it would be much appreciated.  I'm looking for the measurements from edge of the openings of the lids to the adjacent wall of the interior box in all four directions and only on the two most forward boxes.
