Swap Meet / CSY 44 W/O "Surprise" For Sale
« on: July 28, 2020, 06:23:14 am »
I've decided to sell my CSY 44 w/o "Surprise".  She is currently located in Deltaville VA but should be moving south in late September or October.  At the time of this post she is in the water but due to be hauled out for an insurance survey and I'll likely leave her out of the water until bottom painted and spashed in the fall. She is currently not listed with a broker.  The asking price is $84,500.

I purchased her about 5 years ago and have done extensive repairs and improvements so much of the gear is new.  I've taken her to the Bahamas twice in that time and when I moved her to Deltaville in May 2020 everything was working.

I foolishly obtained a dog last year and I need to find a more dog-friendly boat.  I'm getting too old to be lifting a 60lb dog on and off  >:(.

Particulars:
Solent rig with two jibs on roller furling and a hank on staysail (working jib 3 yrs old)
Roller furling main (brand new North main)
Spinnaker
Perkins 4236 diesel with about 4,000 hrs
Maxprop
Bowthruster
Simrad chart plotter, radar, autopilot and VHF w/AIS
Adler Barbour refrigeration
Webasto AC in forward cabin
Manson spade anchor with Lofrans windlass and 200' chain
Dingy davits
400W Solar
Dodger, bimini and cockpit enclosure
9' Caribe dinghy

There are way too many other things to list in this post but if there are any questions please let me know.  You can contact me by replying to this post or via email at svsurprise44 at gmail.com

Systems / Cleaning water tanks
« on: November 02, 2018, 08:34:37 pm »
Has anyone with a 44 w/o cleaned out their water tanks and if so, how did you do it?  The inspection ports are fairly easy to remove but I'm not sure if a pressure washer wand will get in there or whether a brush is a better method.  At this point I don't know what the condition of the tanks is but having a bad experience with fouled tanks on another boat many years ago has me thinking about cleaning them out before heading south next week.

Many thanks in advance for any input.

General Discussion / Atlantic Towers Arch
« on: September 21, 2018, 01:18:24 pm »
I've read the previous posts about experiences with Atlantic Towers arches and have noted that quite a number of 44 WO's have installed one.  Since a few years have gone by since the last post I thought I might ask for any current advice on purchasing and installing one.  Three preliminary questions I have are: Schedule 40 or 80? Mount on deck or side?  Offset legs?

It seems to me these boats just scream for an arch and I'd really like to upgrade the davits I'm currently using.  With a swim platform it's difficult to get the dinghy out and away while hoisting.  I hope to stiffen up the solar panel mounting configuration too.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Don

Systems / Removing thru-hulls
« on: July 11, 2016, 08:51:33 pm »
Does anyone have a creative way of removing old 2" thru-hulls?  I have a few in my 44 w/o with rotten backing blocks.  I think the two on the port side of the engine (intake and drain) are going to be especially tough given the poor access.  I am considering using a sawzall to cut through the block, bolts and threaded thru-hull to avoid having to unscrew the valve from the thru-hull.  I am not 100% certain but I don't recall seeing any flanges on the thru-hull itself which would facilitate using a thru-hull wrench.  Previous experience with a smaller thru-hull revealed that CSY were bedded their thru-hulls in with some pretty tough stuff sealant and I ended up grinding the thru-hull down to pop it out  I hope to salvage the valves and just replace the thru-hulls themselves.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hull and Rig / Helm Seat and Spinnaker Storage
« on: November 25, 2015, 09:26:17 am »
Yes, I know, stupid title to a post.  It's the day before Thanksgiving and I'm bored at work.

A couple of requests for advice.  The first, I've noticed that there isn't a really good place to sit while motoring my 44 W/O. What have others done in the way of the seat for motoring?

The second, we flew the asymmetrical spinnaker for the first time this last weekend and it's one big piece of material.  But I loved the way the boat responded to it and would like to take it next year when we head south.  How do others store their spinnakers while cruising?  I would be hard pressed to just get it down below and if I was able to it would likely take up the entire V-berth.  I may just have to leave it in the basement.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Interior / Port dogs
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:34:54 pm »
I've been rebuilding the starboard side settee shelving on my 44W/O and dimpling my head by bumping into those dang bronze wing nut port dogs.  Has anyone replaced theirs with something more user friendly?  I glanced at McMaster-Carr and saw some nice big plastic knobs with metal inserts that might work.   Any ideas are welcome. Thanks, Don

Interior / Brrrr...cold boats
« on: November 26, 2014, 03:32:14 pm »
Hey All, I've only owned Surprise, a 44 w/o, for 5 months now and winter is fast approaching.  I live aboard in Beaufort NC.  I've found that on these cooler nights this boat is downright cold due to lack of coring in deck and hull.  I've got plenty of heaters and recently purchased an electric blanket but my carbon footprint will be size of bigfoot by February.

So not only am I looking for any advice on how to better insulate the boat, but I also have a question: Do all CSY 44 w/o's have bare fiberglass ceilings?  Do any have headliners? Any other form of covering that might offer some insulation?  I often look up there and consider adding a thin ply headliner with insulation but it's a daunting task.

Two more winters then heading to warmer climates.  In the meantime, I would appreciate any advice you may have.
Thanks,
Don
